Director of Maintenance

Job Description

Lead and perform hands-on rotary-wing aircraft maintenance while overseeing maintenance operations, aircraft readiness, inspections, repairs, component changes, planning, documentation, vendor relationships, and volunteer coordination for the Atlanta-area UH-1 and AH-1 fleet.

• Education & Job Requirements
• Current FAA Airframe and Powerplant certificate
• Significant hands-on rotary-wing maintenance experience
• Demonstrated aviation maintenance leadership or supervisory experience
• Ability and willingness to work directly on aircraft while leading the maintenance organization
• Experience planning major inspections, maintenance events, or component changes
• Strong maintenance-records and documentation discipline
• Experience working with aircraft parts suppliers, repair facilities, or overhaul vendors
• Strong communication, judgment, and leadership skills
• Ability to work effectively with employees, volunteers, pilots, vendors, and executives
• Full-time availability at the Atlanta-area maintenance facility
• Able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical drawings, blueprints, schematics, or maintenance manuals

• Preferred Skills
• Direct UH-1 and/or AH-1 maintenance experience
• Rotary-wing maintenance experience in later-generation military helicopter and/or commercial helicopter environments

• Job Duties & Functions
• Lead maintenance operations for the Atlanta-based UH-1 and AH-1 fleet
• Perform and supervise hands-on aircraft maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, component changes, and scheduled maintenance
• Establish clear maintenance priorities and improve aircraft readiness
• Build and maintain a visual maintenance and project-status system showing aircraft condition, work in progress, parts status, upcoming inspections, and critical obstacles
• Improve pre-phase planning so parts, vendors, technical expertise, and required resources are identified before major maintenance begins
• Lead, mentor, and coordinate volunteer A&P mechanics and other experienced aviation volunteers
• Create meaningful roles and responsibilities that make effective use of volunteer skills and encourage long-term engagement
• Recruit, onboard, and supervise one additional full-time A&P mechanic
• Ensure accurate maintenance records and compliance with the Foundation’s FAA-approved maintenance and inspection program
• Manage relationships with parts suppliers, overhaul facilities, repair stations, and technical specialists
• Obtain competitive quotations and make sound, well-supported purchasing recommendations
• Forecast major component, overhaul, and maintenance requirements
• Serve as the principal maintenance advisor to the CEO
• Exercise final maintenance authority regarding aircraft airworthiness
• Teach and mentor volunteers while valuing volunteer expertise
• Build a capable maintenance team through preparation, competence, respect, humility, and personal example
• Demonstrate strong financial judgment and transparency in vendor decisions
• Practice responsible stewardship of Foundation resources
