- Role Summary
- In this role, you will operate specialized Friction Stir Welding machinery to create precise, high-quality welds for aerospace applications, including the SLS program. You will collaborate with engineers and team members on process development, problem-solving, and quality inspections. You will perform fabrication, assembly, and welding tasks while following established drawings and technical requirements. You will ensure all work meets aerospace quality standards and safety protocols.
- Education & Job Requirements
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must have a minimum of 1 year or more of related experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have a minimum of 3 years of operating specialized Friction Stir Welding machinery.
- Must have knowledge of welding and preparation techniques.
- Must have a strong understanding of metallurgy.
- Must have experience working with welding tools.
- Must have the ability to collaborate with engineers on process development and problem-solving to ensure high-quality, strong bonds.
- Must have an understanding of the welding process and the ability to work alongside engineers and other team units.
- Preferred Skills
- You will have prior experience with aerospace fabrication and assembly.
- You will have experience with composite lay-up and precision mechanical component assembly.
- You will have familiarity with data collection for testing and inspection purposes.
- Job Duties/Functions
- You will support the SLS program rocket by running robotic weld tools and performing weld preparations.
- You will perform machine setup, machining, welding setup, welding, sheet metal fabrication, extrusion, tube bending, and related fabrication tasks.
- You will perform composite lay-up, fabrication, and assembly tasks.
- You will assemble precision mechanical and electro-mechanical components.
- You will assemble, repair, modify, and install various power plants and drive trains.
- You will perform soldering on electronic and avionics products.
- You will assemble and install wire harnesses and avionics products.
- You will prepare test articles, fixtures, and data collection devices for testing.
- You will perform basic organic chemical conversion and paint preparation.
- You will apply routine organic coatings for corrosion protection and appearance requirements.
- You will work on articles of limited complexity following established drawings and requirements.
- You will operate specialized Friction Stir Welding (FSW) machinery to join metal parts using a solid-state process.
- You will prepare materials and inspect welds for quality.
- You will perform routine machine maintenance.
- You will utilize precision measuring tools.
- Additional Duties
- You will undergo specialized training (anywhere from 3-4 weeks) to become fully trained on the SLS process and tools.
- Physical Demands
- You will need to be comfortable with heights.
- All PPE, other than prescription safety glasses, will be provided.
